VARIATION OF ANTARCTIC SEA ICE IN THE LATEST 30 YEARS
    2005, 17 (4):  233-244.
    Abstract ( 1557 )   PDF (1049KB) ( 2153 )

By using the NCEP data of ice concentration from 1973—2002, seasonal and interannual variation of Antarctic sea ice concentration, as well as its relationship with Antarctic Sea ice Oscillation Index in the latest 30 years are studied .It is indicated that characteristic of the seasonal variation of Antarctic sea ice is that the coagulated period is longer than the thaw period. But Arctic sea ice coagulated period is the same as thaw period of sea ice basically. Second, there are clearly interannual change of Antarctic sea ice, and its area index appears uptrend with the trend rate of 28/10a.But Arctic sea ice area index is decrease and its trend rate is -3.5/10a.Third, Antarctic Sea-ice Oscillation index is a important parameter in the variation of Antarctic sea ice which is able to represent sea ice area change of 1/3 approximately with the oscillations cycle of 10 years, 3—5 years and 2 years.

PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF BACTERIAL DIVERSITY IN TOPSOIL SAMPLES FROM FILDES PENINSULA,ANTARCTICA
    2005, 17 (4):  245-254.
    Abstract ( 1921 )   PDF (593KB) ( 1663 )

Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profiles of PCR amplified V3 regions of 16S rDNA were used to assess bacterial diversity in the topsoil samples collected in the vicinity of the Great Wall Station, Antarctica. DGGE profile showed that bacterial phylogenetic composition varied in different soils. Sequences corresponding to 12 dominating excised bands were analyzed and fell into eight lineages of the domain Bacteria: β-, γ-, δ- proteobacteria; Cytophaga-Flexibacter-Bacteroides(CFB) group; Actinobacteria; Acidobacteria; Cyanobacteria and green nonsulfur bacteria. The majority of the sequences were most closely related to the sequences from uncultured microorganisms in environmental (especially soils and sediments).

A STUDY ON POSTNOON MULTIPLE ARC AURORA
    2005, 17 (4):  255-263.
    Abstract ( 1354 )   PDF (937KB) ( 1414 )

In this paper, using 175 days of aurora observation by all sky imager at 2001, 2002 and 2003 year at Zhongshan station, statistics study show that the occurrence of the multiple arcs and relationships to the geomagnetic activity Kp index. The results show that the occurrence of postnoon multiple arcs demonstrates a single peak distribution, and the maximum peak is at 1445 UT (1645 MLT) and the position lies to the nightside part of “1500 MLT hot spot”(1300—1700 MLT). When Kp index falls between 2 and 3, the occurrence of multiple arcs shows the highest. And spectra of multiple arcs intensity variation have a higher correlation and the similar power spectra character with geomagnetic Pc5 pulsation, which shows that postnoon Pc5 pulsation maybe be associated to the occurrence of the multiple arcs.

THE APPLICATION OF SYNCHROTRON RADIATION X-RAY FLUORESCENCE TO RESEARCH ON ARCTIC AEROSOL
    2005, 17 (4):  264-271.
    Abstract ( 1370 )   PDF (444KB) ( 1537 )

Quantitative analysis of aerosol samples, collected in the marine boundary layer in the Arctic region during the First Chinese Arctic Research Expedition, was performed using synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) and ICP-MS method. The resolution for six elements using SR-XRF method were 451.2 ng/cm~2 (Ca),195.9 ng/cm~2 (V), 276.2 ng/cm~2 (Fe), 43.4 ng/cm~2 (Ni), 34.2 ng/cm~2 (Zn), 6.4 ng/cm~2 (Pb), respectively. The levels of elements were 117.3(ng/m~3, Ca)、 16.5(ng/m3, V)、 19.3 (ng/m~3, Fe)、3.4(ng/m~3, Ni)、4.5(ng/m~3, Zn)、1.4(ng/m~3, Pb), respectively. The results for these elements were in accordance with the previous report. Based upon the results and the advantage of SR-XRF, which is highly sensitive and non-destructive of sample, this method will be intensively used in the study of aerosols in polar region in the future.

OBSERVED LATITUDINAL DISTRIBUTION OF GASEOUS POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS ABOARD XUELONG DURING CHINARE 2003
    2005, 17 (4):  272-278.
    Abstract ( 1569 )   PDF (157KB) ( 1455 )

In the 2003 Chinese Arctic Research Expedition (CHINARE 2003) aboard the Xuelong, ocean air samples were collected to analyze gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Only 2—4 ring PAHs were detected in gas phase, and phenanthrene was the most abundant with an average of 55.1% in total PAHs. The total concentration of 10 PAHs, Σ_ 10 PAHs, ranged from 1043.9 2993.1 pg/m~3 during the transect. Spatial distribution showed a pattern of Fareast Asia> north Pacific Ocean > the Arctic. Gaseous PAHs were decreased with the increasing latitudes. The relationship between concentrations and temperature by Clausius-Clapeyron equation indicated that temperature was the main factor governing the transportation of gas-phase PAHs from mid-latitude area to the Arctic.

EVALUATION ON NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF THE SOFT PART IN NACELLA CONCINNA OF GREAT WALL BAY, ANTARCTICA
    2005, 17 (4):  279-284.
    Abstract ( 1353 )   PDF (124KB) ( 1639 )

The limpet samples (Nacella concinna) were collected in the intertidal zone of Great Wall Bay, near the Great Wall Station, Antarctica, and analyzed by conventional biochemical methods. The result showed that the content of crude protein, lipid and ashes in the soft part (dry basis) was 58.39%, 11.54% and 9.97%, respectively. The content of the amino acids to the total dry weight of the soft part was 27.51%, in which the essential amino acids was 11.25%, accounting for 40.89 % of total amino acids. The EAAI was 45.79 , and the first limited amino acid was Val as compared with the FAO/WHO suggested level (1973). The unsaturated fatty acids constituted 21.20% of the total fatty acids. There was a high content of mineral in the soft parts of Nacella concinna. In a word, as a prey, Nacella concinna could provide high quality food for gull (Larus marinus) and penguin.
