THE ANALYSIS OF THE POLITICAL FUTURE OF ANTARCTICA
    2005, 17 (3):  157-164.
    Abstract ( 1332 )   PDF (643KB) ( 1507 )

What is the political future of Antarctica? Where is the Antarctica going,or who does the Antarctica belong to? The Antarctic territory sovereign rights claiming and the distribution of the Antarctic resources are the core points for these problems.Since Antarctica was discovered, the Antarctica problem is a concern and difficulty to face for politicians, diplomats and sociologists, and it is also the hot-point of extensive concern by world-wide people. To date, the Antarctic Treaty, the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties(ATCPs)and the Antarctic Treaty Consulta- tive Meetings(ATCM)are still the best methods which are treating and resolving international affairs and management of the Antarctica. The Antarctica has unique natural geography,origi- nal ecological environment, rich resources and the special political background. So,who does the Antarctica belong to? How to answer this question will be very difficult in a long time. This article analyzes three powers which affect the political future of Antarctica in the past and to- day.

THE POTENTIAL INFLUENCE OF THE SEA ICE AND WATER VARIATIONS TO THE MARINE ECOSYSTEM IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN
    2005, 17 (3):  165-172.
    Abstract ( 1686 )   PDF (538KB) ( 1934 )

In the recent years, the environmental conditions of the Arctic Ocean have been changing quickly and acutely:the decrease of sea ice covered area, thinning of sea ice thickness,in- crease of water temperature and fresh water influx, aggravation of pollution. All these variations threaten the existing ecosystem that has close relationship with sea ice. It's expected that with the continuance of such kinds of changes, the sympagic food web will disappear in some area and be replaced by the species coming from lower latitude, the total primary production will in- crease and maybe bring us much more fish catch, the large mammals who used pack ice as rest and prey locations, such as polar bear and sea elephant, will face survival menace. In the fu- ture,we should study further to understand the environmental and ecological variation charac- teristics and apply them, attend the future of special species in the Arctic Ocean and protect them in our power, assess the influence of ecosystem changes in the Arctic Ocean to the society so as to make some responding measures as early as possible. It can be expected that, with the implement of the large international research programs such as SEARCH,the ecosystem moni- toring and research will become more systemic and comprehensive.

THE SUBSTANCE COMPOSITION OF STEROLS IN THE SEDIMENTS FROM THE CHUKCHI SEA,THE BERING SEA AND CLIMATE EFFECT OF CIRCUMJACENT
    2005, 17 (3):  183-192.
    Abstract ( 1699 )   PDF (687KB) ( 1667 )

The compounds of sterols such as C_(27),C_(28),C_(29) and C_(30) are recorded from C-8 core of the Chukchi Sea:The double key position is located at 5;5,22 as well as 22,24.The compound of sterols such as C_(27),C_(28),C_(29) are recorded from B2-9 core of the Bering Sea.The double- bond is located at 5;5,22 as well as 22,24.The composition of characteristics of sterols indi- cate that the substance is mainly contributed by the terrigenous origin and marine silicate organ- isms. The results are also suggest that the record of abnormal sterols from the surface sediments (2—0 cm)in the Chukchi Sea and the Bering Sea represent the period from 1980s to the late 1990s.The strong signal of the Arctic warming is preserved in the sediments. This indicates the eco-environmental change responding to climate effect of circumjacent.

THE BACKGROUND IONOSPHERIC PROFILES AT POLAR CUSP LATITUTES——ESR OBSERVATIONS
    2005, 17 (3):  193-202.
    Abstract ( 1617 )   PDF (688KB) ( 1631 )

With EISCAT-Svalbard Radar observations from March,1999 to February,2003,a statistical analysis is made on the electron density variations in different seasons around solar maximum to in- vestigate the characteristics of background ionosphere at polar cusp latitudes. It is found that the so- called “winter anomaly”does not exist in the concerned area and for the first time,a major maxi- mum of electron density is found before local magnetic midnight in winter over ESR site.Besides, there always exists a maximum of electron density around local magnetic noon during daytime in all three seasons. The ESR observation results are compared with the IRI-2001 model, showing signifi- cant distinctions, especially in topside ionosphere above 500 km altitude and winter season. The importance of soft particle precipitation on the formation of the electron density maximum at local magnetic noon is discussed briefly, along with the mechanism of the pre-magnetic-midnight major peak in the winter.

WINTER CLIMATE CHANGE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF SEA ICE-ATMOSPHERE INTERACTION IN NORTHERN HIGH LATITUDES FROM THE ERA40
    2005, 17 (3):  203-214.
    Abstract ( 1280 )   PDF (1025KB) ( 1563 )

Based on the European Center of Medium Range Weather Forcast(ECMWF)reanalysis dataset(ERA40),winter climate change and characteristics of sea ice-atmosphere interaction in northern high latitudes for recent several decades are analyzed.Under the background of global warming, the amplitude of temperature increase in winter in northern high latitudes is getting bigger and it has different features in different regions. From the end of 1970s,the Greenland Sea,the Barents Sea and the most part of Euro-Asian continent and North American continent are getting warmer, whereas the Labrador Sea,the Greenland and the area around the Bering Strait are getting colder.Meanwhile, the sea level pressure in the center part of the northern polar region and the region where the climatic Icelandic low exist decreases, but in places farther southward it increases.Since the 1970s,the sensible heat flux and latent heat flux sent to the atmosphere from the Greenland Sea and the Barents Sea has increased, this is mainly due to the reduction of sea ice concentration and the weakening effect of insulator and shield of the solid ice accordingly caused by the increase of air temperature. In sea ice free area of the Norwegian Sea,the sensible heat flux and latent heat flux sent to the atmosphere has re- duced due to decrease of temperature difference between the air and the sea surface caused by increase of air temperature. In the Labrador Sea,due to decrease of air temperature and in- crease of temperature difference between the air and the sea surface accordingly, the sea gives more sensible heat flux and latent heat flux to the air. This will lead to the growth of sea ice ex- tent there. The features of linear regression of sea surface pressure, sea ice concentration and sum of sensible heat flux and latent heat flux toward time series of the leading mode of EOF ex- pansion of surface air temperature are close to those of their own EOF expansion for the leading mode respectively.

THE COLLECTION OF 4448 METEORITES IN GROVE MOUNTAINS,ANTARCTICA,IN 2002—2003:CONFIRMATION OF A NEW METEORITE CONCENTRATION
    2005, 17 (3):  215-223.
    Abstract ( 1498 )   PDF (448KB) ( 1531 )

4448 meteorites, including 2892 stone meteorites,1524 chondrites,25 carbonaceous chondrites,6 achondrites and 1 stone-iron meteorite, have been collected in Grove Mountains, Antarctica, during the 19th Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE)in 2002— 2003 austral summer.Blue ice surface of the southern, middle and northern segments of the Gale Escarpment was searched during this exploration, with discovery of 41,2684 and 1721 meteorites, respectively. We found meteorites on the blue ice surfaces searched with different discoveries of meteorites.Hence,it can be inferred that most other blue ice fields unsearched in Grove Mountains may have meteorites concentrated too. Most small pieces of meteorites (<100 g)on cancaves of blue ice fields or on windward slopes of moraines, were probably blown from the Gale Escarpment and/or upper ice plateau.Meteorites with mass more than 100 g were exposed on blue ice surface due to ablation of ice,and they were probably transported to the locations by glacier. The large number of meteorites demonstrates that the Grove Mountain is one of the most meteorite-concentrated areas in Antarctica.

THE SIGNIFICANCE,STATUS QUO AND PROSPECT OF ANTARCTIC SOFT SCIENCE RESEARCH
    2005, 17 (3):  224-231.
    Abstract ( 1343 )   PDF (583KB) ( 1806 )

Chinese Antarctic research mainly focuses on Natural Science now,and Antarctic Soft Sci- ence research has just begun, involving a little fields. This situation has been restricting Chi- nese voice, rights and interests in international Antarctica affair, and influencing international status of China. In order to change this passive and disadvantageous situation, and urge inter- national Antarctic politics and business to evolve into equity, impartiality and peace,China should think much of Antarctie soft science and strengthen its research. This paper analyses its status quo, problem, future research emphases, and finally forecasts its trend.
