THE IDENTIFICATION AND COMPARISON OF THE BIO-ELEMENTS OF THE ORNITHOGENIC SEDIMENT SAMPLE FROM DAVIS STATION AND GREAT WALL STATION,ANTARCTICA
    2007, 19 (4):  247-254.
    Abstract ( 2222 )   PDF (427KB) ( 3217 )

During CHINARE-22(from December,2005 to March,2006),a lake sediment core named DG4,which contains penguin droppings, was collected from GD2 lake on the Gardner Island near Davis Station,East Antarctica. In this paper,we determined the concentrations of characteristic elements in the ornithogenic sediment, local bedrock and fresh penguin droppings.P,Se,F,S,As,Sr and Cu in DG4 were identified as bio-element assemblage by R-clustering analysis and compared with those in the local bedrock and fresh droppings. The results are similar to Y2 in Ardley Island,West Antarctica. On this basis,P and Se were identified as the optimum bio-elements in DG4,and F,P and S were identified in Y2,respectively.This provides the foundation for studying the past penguin populations in East Antarctica and the comparison of penguin populations between East and West Antarctica.

SCREENING AND CLASSIFICATION FOR LOW-TEMPERATURE SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE-PRODUCING ANTARCTIC BACTERIA AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASES
    2007, 19 (4):  255-265.
    Abstract ( 1418 )   PDF (640KB) ( 1769 )

Four SOD-producting bacteria NJ062,NJ379,NJ522 and NJ548 were selected from 421 Antarctic bacteria. They belonged to psychrophile for their optimum growth temperatures were about 10—15℃ and they could grow at 0 ℃ and they only contained one kind of SOD isoenzymes. The SOD of NJ062 was Mn-SOD,while the SODs of other three bacteria were Fe-SOD.The four SOD's activity at 0 ℃ was nearly 20%—35% of the maximum activity, and their maximal activity temperature was 40—50 ℃.In addition, the four SODs were unstable to higher temperature indicating that they were cold-active enzymes.Four Antarctic psychrophile NJ062,NJ379,NJ522 and NJ548 were identified by 16S rDNA sequence analysis and result showed that all of these four strains belonged to γ-Proteobacteria in Bacteria. The strain NJ062 was determined as genus Pseudoalteromonas sp.,the strain NJ379 belonged to genus Shewanella sp.,and the strain NJ522 and NJ548 were classified as Marinomonas sp..

DEM GENERATION AND ANALYSIS OF FILDES PENINSULA USING IKONOS STEREO PAIRS
    2007, 19 (4):  266-274.
    Abstract ( 1936 )   PDF (676KB) ( 3802 )

The paper mainly addresses DEM generation and analysis of the Fildes Peninsula using IKONOS stereo pairs.IKONOS uses the Rational Polynomial Camera(RPC) model, also called an Image Geometry Model(IGM),as a substitute of rigid geometrical model based on the collinearity equation. The horizontal and vertical accuracies of generated DEM are mainly dependant on the accuracy of RPC model.By only using RPC model, the positional accuracy and vertical accuracy of reference product suite are 25 m(CE90) and 22 m(LE90) respectively, which can't meet the requirements of high accuracy topographic map.In order to improve the accuracy, the ground control points collected during CHINARE-23,2006/2007,are used to revise the previous RPC model. It reveals that the accuracy of extracted DEM improves apparently, which can meet the requirements of 1∶5000 remote-sensing cartographic map and 1∶10000 topographic map.

SUMMER FAST-ICE EVOLUTION OFF ZHONGSHAN STATION,ANTARCTICA
    2007, 19 (4):  275-284.
    Abstract ( 1526 )   PDF (747KB) ( 1834 )

Based on the field data acquired in the program of fast-ice observation off Zhongshan Station,Antarctica during the austral summer 2005/2006,physical properties evolution of fast-ice during the ice ablation duration has been analyzed in detail. Results show that the annual maximum ice thickness in 2005 occurred in later November, then started to melt, and the ablation duration was 62 days;sea water under the ice became warm in summer,so sea water temperature raised fleetly;corresponding to the warming of sea water and the strengthening of solar shortwave radiation, sea ice temperature raised gradually, and a "relative cold mid-layer" appeared in sea ice;under the thermodynamics and dynamics force, the fast-ice marginal line recoiled back to the shore fleetly, and the recoil distance was 20.9 km from December 18,2005 to January 14,2006.In addition, based on the data of sea ice thickness survey along the investigation route on December 18 of 2005,some ice thickness distribution characteristics in the marginal ice zone have been found: sea ice thickness increased from open water to fast ice zone distinctly;the diversity of floe ice thickness decreased from open water to fast ice zone gradually.

PROGRESS ON THE PALEOENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES IN WEST GREENLAND
    2007, 19 (4):  285-294.
    Abstract ( 1231 )   PDF (644KB) ( 1601 )

Being located in Arctic and North Atlantic region,West Greenland is sensitive to global climate changes. Thus, paleoenvironmental studies here are of vital importance. The paper firstly presents an outline on terrestrial and marine Holocene paleoenvironmental studies in West Greenland in recent years. In addition, the differences in paleoenvironmental records based on various proxies are presented and the reasons are discussed.Several future research focuses are given at the end of the paper.

ANALYSES OF SURFACE WINDS ALONG THE TRACK FROM ZHONGSHAN STATION TO DOME-A,ANTARCTICA
    2007, 19 (4):  295-304.
    Abstract ( 1897 )   PDF (1660KB) ( 1747 )

Based on the data from Zhongshan Station and the three automatic weather stations at Antarctic ice sheet,LGB69,EAGLE and DOME-A,the characteristics of the surface wind along the track from Zhongshan Station to DOME-A are analyzed. It is found that wind speed over the deep coastal slope, which is the downstream area of the katabatic wind,is the greatest, and the further inland, the weaker the wind.Located at the highest point of Antarctic inland ice sheet, there is no katabatic wind at DOME-A.Influenced by the topography, the coastal area suffers obvious katabatic wind, with the main wind direction of NE,and most katabatic winds occurr at nights in summer.

THE DESIGN AND DEPLOYMENT OF MOORING SYSTEM IN POLAR REGION
    2007, 19 (4):  305-313.
    Abstract ( 1900 )   PDF (753KB) ( 2211 )

During the Second Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition in 2003,3 mooring systems were deployed in the Bering Sea Strait and Chuckchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean. One was submerged totally and the other two had floating balls at surface. Before the expedition was finished, the submerged mooring and one mooring with floating balls were successfully recovered.Continuous data about 45 days were obtained.By introducing the design and deployment process, the technology questions related with mooring system in polar region are discussed.Selection of observing stations and layers, design of mooring system and the steps of deployment are presented in this paper, which will give the references to deploy anchorage system in the low temperature and ice-covered ocean.
