Abstract: Equipped with a Ku-band SIRAL(SAR/Interferometric Radar Altimter), CryoSat-2 has been launched in 2010 as the first European Space Agency Earth Explorer Opportunity mission.CryoSat-2 has the advantage of measuring fluctuations in Earth’s land and marine ice fields with high precision. The low earth, polar orbit at inclination of 92? fills the previous remote sensing satellite data gaps in a certain extent. In this paper, an overview is provided of the CryoSat-2’s scientific objectives, scientific requirement, mission, instrument concept and data products, with an emphasis on the primary load SIRAL and data calibration. Finally the applications of CryoSat-2 in polar region are introduced.
