    STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DIAMETER OF THE COMPOUND EYE AND GROWTH OF ANTARCTIC KRILL

    Correlation between the body length and the diameter of the compound eye of the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was examined. From the samples collected in the late summer,it shows that there is an apparent exponential relationship between the eye diameter and the body length. From the laboratory population,it seems that when the krill shrink,the diameter of the compound eye does not decrease. It is more reliable to use the eye diameter as krill growth index than body length. The ratio of the body length to the diameter of the compound eye offers another method for detecting the effect of shrinking in natural populations of krill.

    Volcanic geological,petrological and geochemical characteristics of the tertiary volcanic rocks from the Fildes Peninsula,West Antarctica,show that magma evolution was a process of dissipation of heat energy exchanged energy and mass occurring between the magma system and its surrounding environments, and with the feature of dynamic equilibriumand periodicity (stage). The multi grade complex texture of magmatic crystallization and the zonal structure in the high level magma chamber are the self organization phenomenons in the nonequilibrium process of magmatism, and the self organization phenomenons are also called the dissipative structure.

    The large number of meteorites from Antarctica and the desert areas of Australia,Africa and North America changed the previous chondrite classification in recent years.The number of well established groups has increased from 9 to 13(EH,EL,H,L,LL,R,CI,CR,CH,CM,CO,CV and CK) and three new carbonaceous chondrite grouplets have been proposed. There are remarkable differences among chondrite groups in petrographic, mineralogical, chemical and O isotopic characteristics. We suggested that 13 chondrite groups can be divided into carbonaceous chondrite family consisting of CI CR CH,CM CO and CV CK clans and enstitate ordinary chondrite family consisting of EH EL, H L LL and R clans. The carbonaceous chondrites are charcterized by high oxidation state.The enstitate ordinary chondrite family formed near the Sun and in the inner solar system.

    C 5-C 15 HYDROCARBON COMPOUNDS IN SURFICIAL SEDIMENTS FROM THE BRANSFIELD STRAIT,ANTARCTICA

    The C 5-C 15 hydrocarbon compounds have been studied in surficial sediments from the Bransfield strait,Antarctica.They include alkane,iso alkane,cyclohexane,aromatic and their substituted compounds.All samples contain large amount of aromatic compounds as benzene,toluene,xylene and trimethyl benzene.The toluene is the dominant component.The ratio between benzene and hexane is 0.47-1.26. Differentation of alkane,iso alkane,cyclohexane and aromatic compounds was achieved by using R type and Q type factor analysis,as well as principal factor analysis.By these analysis,the three factor of site G 27 have the extreme values.

    PALEOMAGNETIC RESULTS OF CORE NP93 2 FROM THE PRYDZ BAY, EASTERN ANTARCTICA

    Two reversal geomagnetic excursions are detected by systematically paleomagnetic measurements of the core NP93 2 from the Prydz Bay, Eastern Antarctica. One is found in 60 to 67.5cm from the top of the core,and the 14 C dating age of layer 67.5cm to 72.5cm is 10315±800a B.P. It is estimated that the reversal geomagnetic excursion occurred at 9980-8880a B.P.,and perhaps,was the record of the Gothenburg geomagnetic excursion(about 12000a B.P.).The other is found in 27.5-32.5cm,and 14 C dating age is 5390±600a B.P.,with which no generally acknowledged reversal geomagnetic excursion can be compared.But a few reports of reversal geomagnetic excursions in China can be used for comparing with it.Whether the studied reversal geomagnetic excursion does exist or those reported reversal geomagnetic excursions are the same ones is worth further study.

    The change characteristics of magnetic storm of March 24,1991 are analyzed.This magnetic storm has different physical processes at the middle low latitudes and the southern polar cusp region.The magnetic sudden commencement is SC * and the magnetic main phase is composed of a series of the intense substorms at Zhongshan Station,Antarctica. At Beijing Ming Tombs Magnetic Observatory Center,the magnetic sudden commencement is SC ,the magnetic main phase duration is shorter and the change is bigger. This event was caused by the solar activities such as increases of the sunspot numbers, occurrence of a 3b optical flare at 22 h46 mUT on March 22,1991 and so on.

    The vertical ozone profile measurments were firstly performed with balloon borne electrochemical ozonesondes launched at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica during April-November,1993.An atmospheric ozone measurment system,being developed jointly by IAP and CSSAR Academia Sinica, consists of balloon borne ozonesonde, ground receiving system and data processing system.In this paper we describe the performence of this ozone measurment system and present part of its representative measured results.

    Compared with traditional ion chromatography(IC),an advanced analysis technology capillary ion analysis(CIA) is discussed.It is of many advantages such as rapid analysis,high resolution,good separation,simple sample treament,less volume of sample and convenient maintenance et al. .CIA will play an important role in the analysis of Antarctic ice and snow,in place of IC usually used in the same field at present.
