COSMIC-RAY EXPOSURE AGES AND GAS RETENTION AGES OF UREILITE(GRV 024516)AND ORDINARY CHONDRITE(GRV 024517)FROM ANTARCTICA
    2006, 18 (3):  157-165.
    Abstract ( 1600 )   PDF (426KB) ( 1516 )

The GRV 024516 and GRV 024517 meteorite samples collected from Grove Montains,Antactica are ureilite and H5 ordinary chondrite, respectively.Based on the study of mineralogy-petrology we determined and calculated cosmic-ray exposure ages and gas retention ages of these two meteorites. The cosmic-ray exposure ages are 33.3Ma and 51.7Ma,respectively.The gas retention ages are 1936.8Ma and 3720 Ma,respectively.Ureilite contains diamond, graphite and amorphous C,which are the main carrier of noble gases and shows shock metamorphism effects, which induced 40Ar partial loss. The H5 chondrite indicates thermal metamorphism of parent body, and its gas retention age falls between 3220Ma and 4510Ma of the least shocked H5 chondrites.

A SIMULATION STUDY ON IONOSPHERE AFFECTED BY AURORAL PARTICLE PRECIPITATION IN CUSP REGION
    2006, 18 (3):  166-174.
    Abstract ( 1713 )   PDF (750KB) ( 1784 )

A simulation study on the effects of particle precipitation on the polar ionosphere was carried out in this paper. It was studied with the aid of a one-dimensional time-dependent ionospheric model self-consistently in the continuity, momentum and energy equations. With the model, flux tubes of plasma were followed in response to convection electric fields. The trajectories, which had been adopted to follow convecting plasma flux tubes was different from each other. When they convected through cusp region, the time that precipitating particle acting on the plasma flux tube was different. The result of simulation draw a conclusion that when the plasma flux tube stayed long enough in cusp region the electron density of ionospheric F layer would remarkably increase, while when the plasma flux tube stayed short in cusp region the electron density of ionospheric F layer would not remarkably increase. The other result was given by this paper from the other view. The assumption was that the precipitating electrons would act on a plasma flux tube, which convect through cusp region,or not.In the two situations the difference would come into being due to time transformation of electron density in the ionospheric F layer.

CLUSTER OBSERVATIONS OF MAGNETIC FIELD DISTUR-BANCES CAUSED BY FACS IN THE MID-ALTITUDE CUSPS
    2006, 18 (3):  175-184.
    Abstract ( 1350 )   PDF (1027KB) ( 1571 )

Data from the four Cluster spacecraft during the mid-altitude cusp crossings on September 10 of 2002 are presented. The encounters occur under conditions of weak and steady southward Interplanetary Magnetic Field(IMF).The data show that there are the field-aligned currents(FACs)in the cusp causing large magnetic field disturbances. The boundary structures of the cusps are characterized by the FACs interfaces.A method for calculating the velocities of the interface based on multi-point measurements of spacecraft are introduced. Results show that the interfaces are roughly parallel to magnetic field lines, and their velocities are almost dawnward for the southern crossing and almost duskward in the northern pass. The velocities have small values(0.36—0.80km/s)with respect to satellite's velocity in the cusp crossings.

CHEMICAL RESOLUTION MICROTEXTURES ON QUARTZ GRAINS IN LAKE SEDIMENTS INFLUENCED BY PENGUIN DROPPINGS AND EXPERIMENTAL SIMULATION
    2006, 18 (3):  185-196.
    Abstract ( 1463 )   PDF (1640KB) ( 1423 )

Microtextures analysis of quartz grains from the Y2 lake sediment of Antarctic Ardley Island was performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM)in order to investigate the forming mechanism of erosion bowled-pit on quartz grains in sediments influenced by penguin droppings. While this special characteristic didn't occure in the Y2 lake sediments without the influence of penguin droppings and other sedimentary environment.Because of penguin droppings' influences, there is a quite high fluorine ion content in the Y2 sediments. To understand the forming mechanism of the special characteristic,we used 1 mol·L-1 HF acid as dissolving solution to erode numerous quartz grains with fresh surfaces, and then compared it with natural features on quartz grains in the sediments. As a result, the micro-textures on the quartz grains by modeling in the laboratory are very similar to those found in the Y2 lake sediments influenced by penguin droppings, indicating that acidity and fluoride-bearing environment is likely the reason of forming the bowled-pit on quartz surface. Therefore, the close association between erosion bowl-pits and penguin droppings under the special natural conditions of Antarctica may provide valuable insight into the investigating on the Antarctic penguin ecology by the other new method of micro-textures analysis of quartz grains.

COMPARISONS OF POPULATION STRUCTURE OF ANTARCTIC LIMPET(NACELLA CONCINNA)ON THE EAST AND WEST COASTS OF SOUTHERN FILDES PENINSULA
    2006, 18 (3):  197-205.
    Abstract ( 1409 )   PDF (575KB) ( 1769 )

During the 19th Chinese Antarctic expedition in February of 2003,the Antarctic limpet population were investigated on the east and west coasts of Fildes Peninsula. The samples were randomly collected at three sites, the eastside of Ardley Island, the beach near the Great Wall Station and the rocky shore of Geography Bay on the west side of Fildes Peninsula, where limpet densities were counted in situ and samples were taken back for their shell length, width, height and weight. It shows that limpet sizes are obviously different between the populations at both sides of the peninsula. The shell length of limpet at Geography Bay is 1cm longer by average than the east coast. It shows a stronger allometry in the population at the west coast of peninsula. The evidence further postulates that harsher environmental conditions in the west coast are factors resulting in low density and larger shells.Factors, such as wave action, ice scouring and even the bio-harvest,may have modified population structure as well as shell morphology.

CHARACTERIZATION OF EXTRACELLULAR PROTEASES PRODUCED BY ONE ARCTIC MARINE BACTERIUM BSw20353
    2006, 18 (3):  206-214.
    Abstract ( 1298 )   PDF (467KB) ( 1491 )

A psychrotolerant protease-producing bacterial strain BSw20353 was isolated from the Chuckchi Sea in the Arctic, and identified as Pseudoalteromonas tetraodon is based on 16S rDNA sequencing. It could grow at temperature no higher than 38℃.The use of zymogram gels revealed the presence of three or more proteolytic bands in the culture supernatant. These bands may represent individual isozymes, different proteases,or active subunits of a larger proteolytic complex. The change of cultivation temperature affected the production of bacterial proteases, resulting in a change in protease category and quantity. One of these proteolytic bands was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity from the culture supernatant. It could be produced when bacterium growing at 15℃ and 25℃.The optimum temperature and pH for enzyme activity were 55℃ and 8,respectively.On the basis of its biochemical characteristics, the enzyme can be included in the group of metalloproteases that are inhibited by chelators including 1,10-phenanthroline,EDTA and EGTA.It was resistant to PMSF,TPCK,TLCK,and E-64,indicating that the enzyme is neither a serine protease nor cysteine protease. The protease activity was inhibited by pepstatin,an aspartic acid protease inhibitor,Hg 2+ and Sr 2+,but was stimulated by Fe 2+ and Mn 2+.SDS showed obvious inhibiting effect on the enzyme. In addition to iodoacetic acid, dithiothreitol produced a decrease of activity. However, protease activity was enhanced after treated by denaturant of urea or guanidine HCl.
