THE STATISTICS ANALYSIS OF MESOSPHERE SUMMER ECHOES OBSERVED BY DPS-4 AT ZHONGSHAN STATION,ANTARCTICA
    2007, 19 (1):  1-7.
    Abstract ( 1585 )   PDF (870KB) ( 1622 )

In this paper, the Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes(PMSE) are studied with observations of a Digisonde Portable Spunder-4(DPS-4) at Zhongshan Station,Antarctica. It is confirmed that the phenomenon of the PMSE-Es can be identified at MF and HF bands by analyzing the ionospheric E and Es layer's irregular characteristics. There are similarities between Arctic PMSE and Antarctic PMSE-Es in variations of the occurrence rate, such as seasonal variation, diurnal variation and semidiurnal variation, although some discrepancies exist. Finally the discrepancies in diurnal and semidiurnal variations are discussed and could be roughly explained with the distribution of the aurora oval.

STUDY ON PRODUCTION OF ASTAXANTHIN AND IDENTIFICATION OF ANTARCTIC YEAST RHODOTORULA SP.NJ298
    2007, 19 (1):  19-28.
    Abstract ( 1425 )   PDF (672KB) ( 1772 )

In this study,Antarctic yeast NJ298 was identified, and the effects of major environmental factors on the growth and astaxanthin production of NJ298 were investigated. The results indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Rhodotorula based on physico-chemical traits, morphological traits and phylogenetic analysis of ITS rDNA sequences. The astaxanthin was accumulated at the exponential phase and the stationary phase. The optimum carbon and nitrogen sources for astaxanthin production were sodium acetate and peptone, respectively. In range of 0—15℃ Rhodotorula sp.NJ298 could grow, and low temperature could favor astaxanthin accumulation. In range of pH 6—8,Rhodotorula sp.NJ298 could grow, and the optimum pH condition for growth was 7.5.NaCl was not necessary to station NJ298.

MOLECULAR ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY OF ORNITHOGENIC SEDIMENT FROM SVALBARD,ARCTIC
    2007, 19 (1):  29-37.
    Abstract ( 1477 )   PDF (931KB) ( 1971 )

The molecular biomarker compositions of ornithogenic sediments(YN),from Svalbard,Arctic were investigated. The results showed that n-alkanes had a bimodal pattern and their odd-even preference was not obvious. The alkanes contained unresolved complex mixtures(UCM),and relatively higher levels of pristine and retene indicating pollution from the coal mines nearby. The n-alkanols in the sediments with even-to-odd preference might originate mainly from modern biota. The dominant sterol was sitosterol, which is the main sterol found in herbivores feces, indicating that sitosterol might be a marker of input from the birds feces in the sediments. The fatty acids of YN also showed even-to-odd preference, and the main unsaturated fatty acid is C18∶1 acid. The α-hydroxyl acids and ω-hydroxyl fatty acids were also detected in the sediments. In summary, the YN sediments have inputs of organic matter from the adjacent coal mine and from bird feces and plants.

ANALYZING THE ANTARCTIC CIRCUMPOLAR WAVE MODE-A COEXISTENCE SYSTEM OF STANDING AND TRAVELING WAVE
    2007, 19 (1):  38-48.
    Abstract ( 1301 )   PDF (831KB) ( 1597 )

The Antarctic circumpolar wave(ACW) has become a focus of the air-sea coupled Southern Ocean study since 1996,when it was discovered as an air-sea coupled interannual signal propagating eastward in the region of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current(ACC).In order to analyze the mechanism of discontinuity along the latitudinal propagation,a new idea that ACW is a system with a traveling wave in the Southern Pacific and Atlantic Ocean and with a concurrent standing wave in the southern Indian Ocean is proposed in this paper.Based on the ideal wave principle,we retrieve the average wave parameters of ACW using a non-linear approximation method, where we find that the standing part and the traveling part possess similar radius frequency, proving their belonging to an integral system. We also give the latitudinal distribution of wave speed from what we could tell the reason for steady propagation during that period. The spatial distribution of the propagation reveals complex process with variant spatial and temporal scales——the ENSO scale oscillation greatly impacts on the traveling process, while the result south of Australia indicates little connection between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, which may be blocked by the vibration west of Pacific. The advective effect of ACC on the propagation process should be examined clearly through dynamical method.

DISTRIBUTIONS OF NITROUS OXIDE MIXING RATIOS IN THE ATMOSPHERE OVER THE SOUTHERN OCEAN
    2007, 19 (1):  49-60.
    Abstract ( 1460 )   PDF (1146KB) ( 1714 )

Triple air samples were taken during the Cruise in the 21st Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition, and analyzed in the lab on land. The results show that the main mixing ratios of nitrous oxide raise respectively from(309.6±1.6) nL/L over Australia—Zhongshan Station waters to(320.0±1.2)nL/L over the surround Antarcitc waters about 60°S.These changes may be attributed to ocean circulations, seasonal sea ice variations and biological activities during the observations.

EVIDENCE FOR EAST ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET DEVELO-PMENT AND PALAEOCLIMATIC EVOLUTION FROM THE GROVE MOUNTAINS,EAST ANTARCTICA
    2007, 19 (1):  61-68.
    Abstract ( 1777 )   PDF (531KB) ( 1585 )

The Grove Mountains, located about 450 km inland from the coast of the Prydz Bay in the Lambert-Amery glacial system,is an ideal place to carry out studies on the Antarctic ice-sheet development and palaeo-climatic evolution in Antarctica. Financially and logistically supported by Chinese Oceanic Administration and Chinese Polar Research Center, the 22nd Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE) team made a special investigation on the evidence for climatic and ice-sheet evolution in this region.During the field survey of the 2005—2006 Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE),different kinds of Cenozoic sedimentary records were found in the Grove Mountains,including(1) different types of glacial moraines left by pre-existed glaciers developed in this region at different stages;(2) large quantity of glaciogenic sedimentary erratics found in the moraine banks in the center area of Grove Mountains;(3) different scales of glacier erosion landforms, esp.,the glacial stria, formed by pre-glacier movements at different stages;and(4) extraneous ice boulders and palaesols found in different places near the center of this region. All these record a complex climatic evolution history in this region accompanied by a fairly dynamic ice-sheet evolutionary process.

DATA PROCESSING OF SHIPBOARD-ADCP IN POLAR SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITIONS OF CHINA
    2007, 19 (1):  69-75.
    Abstract ( 1320 )   PDF (137KB) ( 2286 )

Abundant under-way velocity data in polar scientific expeditions of China have been accumulated ever since ice-breaker "Xuelong" was mounted the Shipboard-ADCP. It is very important for ocean current study in the Southern Ocean and adjacent sea area of Antarctica to derive current information from under-way ADCP data. Based on disturbance factor analysis, the approach of data processing of Shipboard-ADCP in polar scientific expeditions of China is presented.Several steps are vital for data processing and they are data quality examination, adjustment of time consistency, emendation of ship heading, ship speed elimination. The current data can be achieved only after these steps are accomplished well and truly.
