STUDY ON DIATOM SURFACE SEDIMENT ASSEMBLAGES IN DISKO BUGT (BAY),WEST GREENLAND
    2008, 20 (3):  229-239.
    Abstract ( 1556 )   PDF (871KB) ( 1323 )

This paper analyzed the diatoms in the surface sediments of Disko Bugt (bay) in West Greenland and totally 78 species and varieties of diatom are found. The surface sediment diatoms of Disko Bugt (bay) are divided into two assemblages by correspondence analysis. Assemblage I,Fragilariopsis cylindrus-Fragilariopsis oceanica is located in the southern coast and the center of Disko Bugt (bay). Assemblage Ⅱ,Detonula confervaceae resting spore-Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii,is situated in the northern part of Disko Bugt (bay),of which the temperature and salinity of sea-surface are lower. Furthermore, due to the differences in the surface circulation and water depth,Assemblage I is divided into two sub-assemblages. Assemblage Ia,F. cylindrus-F. oceanica-Pauliella taeniata, appears in the coastal area. Assemblage Ib,F. cylindrus-F. oceanica-Thalassiosira antarctica var. borealis resting spore-Thalassiosira cf. antarctica var. borealis,is located in the center of Disko Bugt (bay).

DISTRIBUTION AND ENVIRONMENT SIGNIFICANCE OF OCPs、PCBs IN PYGOSCELIS PAPUA DROPPING SOIL CORES AND EGGS
    2008, 20 (3):  240-247.
    Abstract ( 1390 )   PDF (553KB) ( 1810 )

210Pb dating for stratigraph in penguin dropping amended soil has been measured, and organochlorine pesticides content in dropping amended soil stratigraph and penguin eggs by GC-ECD. Maximal concentration of organochlorine pesticides in stratigraph appear in surface: PCBs are 0.92 ng/g,HCHs 0.42 ng/g,and DDTs 0.70 ng/g. Comparing with non-dropping amended soil, this research showed that input of PCBs and OCPs in dropping amended soil stratigraph (nidation and dejecta) with activity of birds were much more than that with no birds. ∑PCB in penguin eggs are 0.4—10.2 ng/g,∑DDT 2.4—10.3 ng/g,HCB 0.1—9.4 ng/g,and ∑HCH 0.1—0.5 ng/g,while total accumulation levels ordinally are: ∑PCB>∑DDT>HCB>∑HCH.

DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE Of CHLOROPHYLL IN WINTER SEA ICE FROM WEDDELL SEA,ANTARCTICA
    2008, 20 (3):  248-257.
    Abstract ( 1298 )   PDF (675KB) ( 1294 )

The investigation on sea-ice research was carried out in North-Western Weddell Sea,Antarctica, during the cruise of ANT/XⅢ-7 on board POLARSETEN in austral winter (Aug—Oct) of 2006. Biogeochemical parameters of Chlorophyll a,POC and C/N from sea ice cores were measured. The results indicated that the gross value of Chlorophyll a ranged from 14.7μg·l-1to 1519.2μg·l-1 with the mean of 233.8μg·l-1,and it was up to 100μg·l-1 by 57% ice cores. The concentrations of chlorophyll a ranged from 2.1μg·l-1 to 84.4μg·l-1 with the mean of 16.6 μg·l-1 per core, which was 2.2 times higher than that in the beginning of winter and 7.5 times higher than that in mid-winter in Weddell Sea. The mean value of R (chlorophyll a / gross of chlorophyll) was 83%. It indicates that stronger activation of ice algae cells are significant primary production in Antarctic sea ice in the winter. Also ice algae could lend great support to spring bloom of phytoplankton in waters. Therefore,it would largely contribute to the growth of marine larvae of zooplankton, and promote sustainable development of marine ecosystem in the Southern Ocean as well.

THE PROGRESS ON POLAR VASCULAR PLANTS
    2008, 20 (3):  258-264.
    Abstract ( 1428 )   PDF (571KB) ( 1699 )

Polar vascular plants have attracted attentions due to the special environment where they grow. Here we review the progress on structure, physiology, genetics and origin of polar vascular plants in recent years. These researches gave the knowledge of polar vascular plants including the adaptation mechanism, the feature of genetic diversity, and the patterns of colonization and origin. The ultrastructural features of leaves such as the protrusion of chloroplast and the close special contact of chloroplast and mitochondria were considered in relation to the adaptations of the plants to the conditions in the polar region. The accumulations of carbohydrate, proteins, the regulation of enzymes, and the express of genes stimulated by stress under low temperature and long day permitted the plants to survive in the harsh polar condition. The secondary metabolites contents changed with the intensity of ultraviolet radiation and light, which protected the plants from strong radiation. The genetic diversity and colonization patterns of vascular plants were affected by the geographical and climatic environment of the polar. The populations of Deschampsia antarctica showed low genetic diversity, and low level of gene flow occurred between neighboring populations. The colonization pattern of D. antarctica accorded with stepping-stone model, while the arctic plants had the long-distance colonization. The viewpoints from several fields of science indicated that the vascular plants were most probably migrated to Antarctica through bird aid.

A REVIEW ON STUDIES OF ANTARCTIC ICE SHELVES AND ADVANCES IN CHINESE RESEARCH ON AMERY ICE SHELF
    2008, 20 (3):  265-274.
    Abstract ( 1791 )   PDF (823KB) ( 2622 )

Antactic ice shelves are one of the key regions for understanding mechanism of climate change in Antarctica and predicting global climate changes in the future. This paper summarized the research work on Antarctic ice shelves since the 20th centuries, which included the interaction between the ice shelf and the ocean, the conformation and characteristics of ice shelves and interior structure, the sedimentary characteristics of cores from seabed and the evolvement of sea ecological system near the ice shelves. And the advances in Chinese researches on Amery Ice Shelf were also introduced. Based on the future program of Antarctica during 2007/2008 IPY,Chinese research plan on Amery Ice Shelf was presented.

PROGRESS OF PREDICTION OF THE GLOBAL CRYOSPHERE CHANGE
    2008, 20 (3):  275-286.
    Abstract ( 1886 )   PDF (967KB) ( 3031 )

The modeling simulation and modeling prediction of each component (sea ice, snow and frozen ground, ice sheet and shelves, glacier and ice cap, lake and river ice) of the Cryosphere is reviewed. Firstly, the ability of the modeling simulation to reproduce each component’s changes observed during the last decades is investigated. Secondly, the reliability of the modeling prediction to project over the 21st century is assessed. The conclusion is drawn: the seasonal and interannual variability of some components (eg. sea ice) observed on the large scale is successfully reproduced by current models, and the ability of simulation is greatly improved. On the other hand, the dynamical and thermal process of some components (eg. ice sheet) is not well represented in models, even some components' (eg. river ice) models are based on statistics. The development of models is not equivalent among the cryosphere components. The uncertainty of current simulation and prediction of global cryosphere by models always exist. All the uncertainty is mainly from the detail of physical process which is poorly understood. The physical process and observation research on cryosphere components is urgently needed.
